Sad to read the news of one of my favourite clothing ranges and part of my staple wardrobe from th 1990’s Ted Baker are about to call in the administrators.
Ted Baker are huge. Really huge. I know they have had their issues over the years outside of the boardroom but I really feel that this is another example of how a takeover is not always the right answer.
The pandemic didn’t help but I am surprised that a brand of this level is in this situation. The fashion brand has struggled due to competition and the fallout from founder Ray Kelvin’s 2019 departure amid misconduct allegations. In 2022, Authentic Brands Group (ABG) acquired it for £211m after it reported a £43m pre-tax loss. The brand, once with 500 outlets globally, now employs 975 people in the UK and Europe, down from 1,200. ABG is evaluating the future of its European arm, NODL, after ending a partnership with AARC. The brand also operates in the US, Asia, and the Middle East, and licenses products like childrenswear and lingerie, managed by Next.
I am sure that someone will come in to buy Ted Baker. After all I need some new shirts for the summer!
