Each year, it’s always interesting to see which countries top the lists for categories like:

  • “Best country in Europe to work in”
  • “Top country to create a startup”
  • “Best country for a lifestyle change”

It’s usually the same countries that dominate these lists in Europe—Scandinavia (Norway, Denmark, Finland, Sweden). But, oh, how things are changing.

Scandinavia is going through a tough time. Many companies are going bankrupt, stricter immigration laws have led to record waiting times for work permits, and there are higher levels of emigration rather than immigration. Unemployment has also been on the rise since 2022.

So, it’s refreshing to see Spain now topping many of these lists as one of the best places to move to, and how it’s transforming the landscape with financial growth.

Spain is actually Europe’s success story, posting GDP growth that far outstrips its neighbors.

International observers took note last year as Spain outperformed its eurozone peers, with an economy that grew by 2.5%, one and a half times faster than France (1.1%) and Italy (1%).

And spare a thought for Germany, the country Spain is replacing as Europe’s economic engine, which actually saw its economy shrink in 2023.

The OECD recently upgraded its forecast for Spain’s economy this year, from 2.5% to 2.8%, while its peers are barely sputtering along.

Not to be outdone, Spain’s National Institute of Statistics (INE) just revised economic growth even further upwards, to 3.1%.

Spain, the fourth-largest economy in the eurozone and the 15th in the world, is already home to several major household names and industrial champions.

These include Europe’s fourth-largest bank, Santander, and the world’s largest textile company, Inditex, parent to the high-street brand Zara, owned by Amancio Ortega, who is worth €1.43 billion.

Then there’s the infrastructure construction company Ferrovial, which owned 25% of Heathrow Airport.

There is no doubt that companies are increasingly looking to Spain as the next major market within the EU.
