When it comes to second markets most countries have their “Go to platform”. Example USA has Craigslist, UK has Gumtree, Sweden Blocket etc.

The past five years though has seen an explosion of second hand markets apps, especially within clothing (Plock, Vinted etc).

So it is interesting to read that TikTok is launching its second hand market place Tik Tok Pre-Owned in Central Europe. After launching in the United States and the United Kingdom, TikTok Shop now aims to enable the trade of second-hand products on its platform elsewhere in Europe. The company is currently recruiting a program manager who will be responsible for defining and implementing the pre-owned category strategy across the European Union.

TikTok Shop is set to grow its presence in the second-hand market across Europe and is hiring a program manager to lead the charge. The role involves driving the vision and strategy for pre-owned categorie, from trading cards to household appliances while also building strong governance frameworks, policies, and operational support.

Last spring, TikTok Shop launched Preowned Luxury in the UK, allowing users to shop for authenticated, preloved fashion directly within the app. The launch was made possible through partnerships with Luxe Collective, Sellier Knightsbridge, Sign of the Times, Hardly Ever Worn It, and Break Archive. This positioned TikTok Shop as a direct competitor to platforms like eBay UK, which had just removed seller fees for pre-owned clothing.

In the U.S., TikTok introduced Preowned Luxury earlier and expanded it last October to include refurbished electronics, a category now also available in the UK. Sellers must provide certification from third-party authenticators to list their products.

Although returns are generally not allowed, TikTok Shop enforces a strict anti-counterfeit policy that guarantees full refunds if a product is proven to be fake. The new job listing signals TikTok’s intent to broaden its second-hand offerings across Europe, opening the door for more sellers and product categories.

Since six weeks ago, TikTok Shop has been officially available in Germany, France, and Italy. The shopping feature was already live in the United Kingdom, Spain, and Ireland. The number of European countries now stands at six, including the five largest ecommerce markets in Europe. An expansion to other countries on the continent is expected.

A big chance for Bytedance to increase its control in Europe.
